"What is it that leads us to believe that the stressed child merely needs 'comforting' while the stressed adult needs medicine?"
--Dr. Deane Juhan
Until the 1990s, massage therapy was still a fairly new idea in our culture. Oftentimes well-intentioned people still describe us as "masseurs" or "masseuses." These terms are sometimes associated with images we've seen on television shows -- indulgences for the wealthy or romantic encounters.
But these perceptions are changing. As alternative medicine continues to become more ingrained in our culture, therapeutic massage has been widely recognized as a form of healthcare. Now you see professional massage therapists working with chiropractors, doctors, and corporations. See Where it's at for a list of companies that have utilized professional massage therapists in the workplace.
The following are some frequently asked questions about corporate on-site chair massage:
Q. How can we justify spending money on this "perk" regularly?
A. It's an investment. While massages will most certainly raise morale on stress-relief day, they also have several health benefits. Short-term it will rejuvenate, refresh, and help alleviate pain and stress. This will be noticeable immediately. Regular massages will lower blood pressure, loosen muscles, defeat chronic pain patterns, help eliminate stress, and even boost the immune system! Your return...increased productivity and decreased absenteeism.
Q. Will participants have to take their clothes off?
A. No. Conveniently enough, clients relax in a comfortable chair, clothes on.
Q. Can staff members pay individually?
A. If you are interested in a successful wellness program:
Higher participation levels. Sometimes for people to realize the long-term benefits of massage, they need to experience it consistently. This is much more likely to happen when it is a benefit provided to them free-of-charge. We strongly believe your company will benefit ten-fold if you invest in this program.
Q. Do the therapists accept responsibility for any negligible action?
A. Yes All of our therapists are insured, most by the American Massage Therapy Association. (Thankfully we've never heard anyone having to use it). As of the year 2000, AMTA insurance policies coverage is $2,000,000 general liability each incident and $6,000,000 aggregate.
Q. Wouldn't this be distracting to our work environment?
A. Sometimes the first day is abuzz with excitement and discussion but it quickly becomes almost necessary routine as people soon discover the true benefits of massage therapy.
Q. Will our staff get too relaxed?
A. Our massage therapists are trained to conclude sessions with energizing techniques to leave our clients feeling relaxed, alert, and rejuvenated.
